The program was named Computer Musical Composer, or CMC. The CMC was designed to work with the Daikin’s Sega palette sampler, through a DB33 cable connection. The sampler could produce CMC’s predefined tones and measures when it received MIDI (musical instrument digital interface) instructions from a computer. There was one problem though; the program only worked with a single tone at a time.

Dr. Wagner used his masterful insight to create an algorithm that could generate multiple tones simultaneously using many different waveforms, creating what is today known as FM synthesis. In 1997, Dr. Wagner finally released CMC to the public, allowing users to download it from the Internet.
